Blazers Down Memphis, 4-1

April 6, 2008

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UAB women's tennis team earned a 4-1 victory at Memphis on Sunday to improve to 9-4 (3-2 C-USA) on the season. Senior Antonia Nugent won the clinching match at No. 3 singles.

"This was a great win against a much-improved Memphis team," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "Today was a very mentally draining and tough match. Antonia faced adversity today and played very well and won a great match."

UAB won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.

After Memphis got an 8-1 win at No. 1, UAB came back and got wins at flights two and three. Senior Gulsah Esen and freshman Giorgia Romeo won 8-4 at No. 2, while senior Seden Soyalp and freshman Jenny Cape won by the same score at No. 3.

Cape won 6-3, 6-4 against Lindsey Wiseman at No. 4 singles and Romeo beat Kristen Chamberlain, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 to set up Nugent for the match-clinching victory at No. 3 as she beat Amanda Brown, 7-6, 6-2.

Freshman Evelien Strijker lost to Ashley Murdock at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (8).

Flights two and six were not finished.
