March 13, 2007 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB women's basketball senior Carmen Guzman has been honored as the Alabama Athlete of the Month for February by the United States Sports Academy, announced the committee on Tuesday morning. Guzman finished ahead of South Alabama basketball player Demetric Bennett and Auburn baseball player Josh Donaldson, who tied for second. Guzman has been accumulating numerous honors during her final season as a Blazer, including being named Conference USA's Player of the Year and earning a spot on the league's first-team all-conference. Guzman leads UAB, ranks second in C-USA and is listed as 10th in the nation in scoring with 21.5 ppg. She accounted for over 31 percent of the Blazers' scoring this season, leading them to an 18-12 record, including a 12-4 mark in league play, and a berth in the postseason WNIT. In addition to her scoring ability, Guzman also added 5.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per contest. Most recently, she was named as one of the 52 finalists for the Kodak/WBCA All-America team. The Alabama Athlete of the Month award is chosen by a voting committee made up of former Alabama athletes, state-wide media and Alabama sports organization representatives. Each Alabama Athlete of the Month honoree is automatically added to the Alabama Athlete of the Year ballot at the end of the year.
