Bryan Welch is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the UAB baseball program. Welch comes to UAB from the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League where he served as pitching coach from June-August of 2003. Welch was the pitching coach at Occidental College, a Division III program in Los Angeles, during the 2003 season. He also has extensive scouting experience as he served as an associate baseball scout for the Cleveland Indians and was an exclusive scouting coordinator for the Baseball Factory in Columbia, Md. in 2002. In addition, Welch was a scout for the Cape Cod League and the state of Florida in 2001, assisting ESPN analyst/commentator Peter Gammons. Welch was a two-year letterwinner for both Rollins College and Stetson University. He was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 1996 Major League Baseball draft. While at Stetson, the team won a conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Regionals in Atlanta in 2000. Welch received his bachelor's degree in sports administration from Stetson in 2001. |
