Mark Vellek, Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations, came to UAB in August of 2006 and serves as the primary media contact for the Blazer baseball program. Aside from his baseball duties, Vellek is the primary contact for volleyball, women's tennis and synchronized swimming, while also assisting with football and men's basketball.

Prior to joining the Blazers, Vellek worked as a full-time intern in the Athletic Communications office at Syracuse University where he served as the primary contact for women's soccer, men's and women's swimming & diving, women's tennis and the top-10 nationally ranked men's rowing program. In addition, he served as the secondary contact for the 2006 Big East Tournament champion men's basketball team and the men's lacrosse team, which appeared in the Final Four in 2006. He also assisted with football at Syracuse.

A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Vellek earned his B.A. in mass communications from Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Pa., in 2005. While at Bloomsburg, Vellek played four years of varsity tennis and worked as a student assistant in the Sports Information office.

Vellek is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Alabama Sportswriters Association. Vellek has been honored by his peers with three Citations for Excellence in Publications by CoSIDA and had his 2006 Syracuse University Field Hockey Media Guide finish `Best in the Nation' for field hockey and second nationally in single-sport media guides at the annual CoSIDA convention in San Diego, Calif.
